4D Ultrasound

4D Imaging shows baby smiling, yawning, sucking fingers, and more

Mercy Hospital of Folsom now offers patients access to a four-dimensional (4D) ultrasound system, adding one of the latest advances in imaging to the hospital's complement of diagnostic services. This equipment is part of a multi-million dollar investment Mercy Hospital is making to bring digital, cutting-edge technology to the people it serves in the burgeoning Folsom, El Dorado Hills and surrounding foothills communities.

See Images in Real Time

The new Philips iU22 four-dimensional (4D) ultrasound system stands apart from traditional two-dimensional (2D)-ultrasound technology by providing greatly enhanced image quality and the ability to see three-dimensional (3D) images in real time (live action). Parents can see their baby moving: smiling, yawning, blinking and sucking fingers. The system's powerful imaging capabilities are also used to aid diagnoses within a broad range of clinical specialties including urology, endocrinology and vascular medicine. The new system's images are clearer and more detailed, allowing Mercy Folsom's physicians to provide answers for patients more quickly and easily.

Because it is non-invasive and can be used without side effects, ultrasound has become a popular diagnostic method among both patients and physicians. Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce moving images of the body's internal soft tissue structures providing a safe, fast and relatively painless means of diagnostic imaging.

System Details

Mercy Folsom's new 4D ultrasound equipment features an adjustable, articulating flat screen LCD monitor that can be positioned for viewing from almost any direction. This allows patients the ability to see images during the scanning procedure. The system can be operated by voice command when the operator is in tight quarters or needs both hands for scanning. A highly moveable control panel also increases the operator's flexibility to work around the patient.

  • Early clinical use by physicians indicates that the Philips iU22 4D-ultrasound system will:
  • Make ultrasound exams much faster
  • Help patients and their physician better visualize and understand their condition
  • Enhance diagnostic capability, thus reducing or eliminating the need for more expensive or invasive tests and procedures
  • Provide clearer ultrasound images, especially in difficult-to-image patients
  • Guide catheters and needles without radiation exposure
